TOM Awards … The Pride of our Association The Outstanding Mapuan (TOM) is a joint and annual project of the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) and the National Association of Mapua Alumni (NAMA). The TOM primarily seeks to give due recognition to the alumni of MIT who have excelled in their profession or vocation, or have made outstanding contributions to the welfare of the school, the community, the country, and/ or the world. The categories of awards include Professional Field of Practice (Architecture, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Mining, Metallurgical, Computer, Industrial, etc.), Specialized Fields of Endeavor ( Academe, Military, Entrepreneurship and Pioneering Endeavor), International Fields Endeavor and Fields of Service (Alumni and Community). The TOM aims to focus the attention of the MIT alumni and the public on these achievements so they may serve as inspiration for everybody. To date, MAAAC is very pleased to pay tribute to the following members as TOM Awards recipients:
Benjamin Ang, TOM 2003 (Specialized Field Endeavor, Entrepreneurship – Mechanical Engineering)
Jose “Pepe” Abesamis, TOM 2005: (Specialized Field Endeavor - Entrepreneurship) Pepe completed his B.Sc in Architecture at MIT in 1964 and successfully passed the architectural licensure in the Philippines. He started his career at the Manila International Airport as an Architect and subsequently worked as Civil/Structural/Architectural Designer with international companies like Montreal Engineering (Monenco), Bantrel, and Fluor Canada. Besides practicing his profession, he and his wife own and operate Melly’s Bakery and Cake Shop in northeast Calgary. He was a founding member of MAAAC and served as President in 2000 – 2004. Pepe was born and raised in Nueva Ecija and married to Melly Abesamis (nee Sabater) of Imus Cavite. They are blessed with 4 chidren: Mark, Deo Alex, Rachel and Maria. Pepe and his wife Melly currently lives in Calgary.
Julius “Jiggs” Bascon, P.Eng., TOM 2009 (International Field of Practice – Civil & Structural Engineering)
Dom Tolentino, P.Eng., TOM 2012 (International Field of Practice – Electrical Engineering) Dom completed his B.Sc. in electrical engineering at MIT in 1975 and successfully passed the assistant and professional electrical engineering licensure in the Philippines. He has long been involved with the oil and gas industry in Canada and internationally and has over 37 years of experience varying from engineering, construction and operation. He started his career in Meralco as cadet engineer and subsequently worked with international companies like Aramco, Brown & Root, Shell, SNC-Lavalin and CNRL. He joined Brion Energy Corp., an oil & gas operating & producing company, in 2013 and currently serves as a senior project engineer – electrical and automation for the MacKay River SAGD project. He was a founding member of the MAAAC and served as President in 2010 – 2011. He is a Professional Engineer in Canada and registered APEGA member for seven years. Dom was born in Mabalacat, Pampanga and currently lives in Calgary with his wife Josie Tolentino (nee Mariano). They are blessed with 3 children Sheila, Carol and Jerell and twin grandchildren, Avie and Grace. Dom enjoys spending time with family, playing golf, listening to good music and interacting with humorous people. |
